Foreign (ICAO) Pilot Licence Conversion Services

1. PPL Conversion

Converting your international pilot licence to a Canadian Private Pilot Licence (PPL) is straightforward with Canadian Aviation College. Here's how:

  • Pass a Canadian medical exam conducted by a recognized Transport Canada aviation medical examiner.

  • Successfully complete the PSTAR exam (Canadian air law) and obtain a Restricted Radiotelephone Operator Certificate.

  • Canadian Aviation College provides comprehensive courses and services to ensure success in these exams.

 

Requirements for obtaining a Canadian PPL include:

  • Minimum of 45 flight hours, including 17 hours dual and 12 hours solo flight.

  • 5 hours of instrument flight, with a maximum of 3 hours in a flight training device (FTD).

  • Complete a 150 nautical mile solo navigation with 2 stops.

 

2. CPL Conversion

Converting your international commercial pilot licence (CPL) to a Canadian CPL involves:

  • Totaling 200 flight hours, including 100 hours Pilot-in-Command (PIC).

  • Completing 10 hours of night flying (5 hours dual and 5 hours solo).

  • Accumulating 20 hours of instrument flight, with up to 10 hours in an FTD.

  • Completing 20 hours of navigation, including a 300 nautical mile navigation.

  • Passing the CPL written exam and flight test.

 

3. ATPL Conversion

Convert your international airline transport pilot licence (ATPL) to a Canadian ATPL by meeting these requirements:

  • Totaling 1500 flight hours, including 250 hours PIC (co-pilot hours recognized at 50%).

  • Completing 100 hours of night flying, with 25 hours of night navigation.

  • Accumulating 250 hours of navigation and 75 hours of instrument flying (up to 20 hours in an FTD).

  • Passing the SARON/SAMRA and IFR written exams, as well as the IFR flight test on a multi-engine aircraft.

  • Obtaining a Class 1 medical from a Transport Canada aviation medical examiner.

 

4. Rating Conversions of an International Licence (night rating, instrument rating, multi-engine rating)

Convert your international ratings to Canadian equivalents while adhering to Canadian regulations:

  • Hold a Canadian licence.

  • Obtain a Canadian medical.

  • Pass required written exams and flight tests.

  • Complete the rating request form and pay associated fees.

ICAO PPL and CPL Licence conversion procedures (FAA licence may differ): 

  • Enroll in our licence conversion program.

  • Provide a copy of your Pilot Training Record and Licence upon arrival.

  • Complete ground school (FAA Licence holders may be exempt).

  • Undergo a check ride with our Chief Flight Instructor to assess skills and familiarity with Canadian airspace and airports.

  • Pass Transport Canada written, flight, language proficiency, PSTAR, and radio tests (FAA Licence holders may require a written conversion test only).

Estimated Costs:

 

  • Written Exam, Flight Test, Licence Fee, Language Proficiency, PSTAR, Radio Test: $1250.

  • Conversion Service: $2500.

  • Additional flight training: $330/h (dual), $270/h (solo), $600/h (multi-engine), $200/h (FTD), $95/h (ground briefing), plus potential fuel surcharges.
